# Leaderboards

> Turn on optional class rankings and choose how much of the leaderboard students can see.

## Enable leaderboards for a classroom

1. Open **"Settings"**, then **"Classroom"**.
2. Under **"Leaderboards"**, turn on **"Show leaderboard"**.
3. Choose a **"Leaderboard style"**, then select **"Save"**.

Under "Classroom" (1), turn on "Show leaderboard" (2) and choose a "Leaderboard style" (3).

Leaderboards are off by default. This setting applies to all assignments and
assessments in the classroom. Turn off **"Show leaderboard"** and select
**"Save"** to stop showing rankings.

## Choose what students see

* **"Podium"** shows the top three qualifying finishers and the student's own
score. Students outside the podium do not see their rank.
* **"Full roster"** shows every qualifying finisher's place and score, with the
  student's own result highlighted.

Both styles display names using a first name and last initial.

Rankings can encourage friendly competition, but they may not suit every
classroom. See [Gamification](https://docs.typetheword.com/classroom/gamification) for Type the Word's approach
to optional gamification.
